Geneva, Grand Valley high schools honored by a national magazine

U.S. News and World Report has given national recognition to two Ashtabula County high schools in its latest annual rating of the best in the country.

Geneva and Grand Valley high schools are the county’s representatives on the list, winning bronze medals from the magazine. Grand Valley has won the award two consecutive years, while Geneva collected the honor a few years ago.

“We’re very, very pleased,” Mary Zappitelli, Geneva Area City Schools superintendent, said Thursday. “To be recognized twice in just the past few years is something special.”

Bill Nye, Grand Valley superintendent, said Thursday he would check with staff to confirm the school’s award.

U.S. News crunched plenty of academic numbers to create its yearly list, according to its website. State proficiency results were analyzed, as well as information on how well schools prepared students for secondary education.

Among the thousands of schools the magazine deemed eligible across the country, 500 won gold medals, 1,519 took the silver and 2,688 the bronze medal, according to the magazine’s website. Ohio has 832 high schools within 679 districts. Twenty-two of them earned gold medals, 93 silver and 129 — including the two from Ashtabula County — received bronze, according to the website.

Chardon High School was a silver medal winner and ranked 74th in the state, the same spot it held on the magazine’s 2013 list. Chardon ranked 1,512 nationally, according to the magazine.

Zappitelli said Geneva’s honor resulted from a “group effort.”

“It’s the result of support we receive from the community and the hard work of the staff, students and their parents,” she said.
