Calamity make-up means longer days in Buckeye

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Class days in the Buckeye Local Schools district will be lengthened 30 minutes starting next week to help make up four days lost to the harsh winter, Superintendent Joseph Spiccia said.

The Buckeye Local Board of Education agreed this week to add 15 minutes to the start and end of each school day starting Monday and continuing through May 23. In addition, students will attend classes on June 6 and June 9, Spiccia said.

Buckeye canceled classes nine days due to inclement weather this past school year. Five so-called calamity days are built into the calendar, but the district is obliged to make up the remaining four days.

Many other Ashtabula County districts are using longer class days, additional days, home-based work — or a combination — to satisfy the calamity day make-up requirement set forth in a bill passed by Ohio lawmakers last month.
