Rivers Edge Diner closing, but ice cream shop opening

ASHTABULA — Rivers Edge Diner, a popular Bridge Street restaurant, will close April 27.

Rivers Edge opened three years ago at 1001 Bridge St., a stone’s throw from the historic lift bridge. Old-timers may remember it as the Doxsie Deli.

Owners Ryan and Aimee Watts, with their two young children, moved back to Ashtabula for “a better quality of life” and opened Rivers Edge Diner, Ryan Watts said.

It was the Watts first step into the world of small business.

“Unfortunately, the business needed me to work as cook six days a week,” he said. “This was particularly troubling not only for me, but also my wife, the same woman who had traveled with me back to Ashtabula for a better quality of life.”

Watts quietly started looking for someone to buy the diner.

Quite unexpectedly, his brother and wife, Corey and Katie Watts, approached him about turning the diner into Loading Dox Ice-cream and Eatery, similar to the Whippy Dip business they own on Route 20 in North Kingsville.

“The have a passion and love for small business ownership,” Ryan Watts said. “I am thrilled my family will be operating in the same space that I took such great pride.”

Katie Watts said she would describe the Loading Dox as “fast, casual food.”

They hope to open the new business Memorial Day weekend. The Whippy Dip in North Kingsville will remain as it is today.

Ren Carlisle of the Lift Bridge Community Association said, “The Rivers Edge Diner has been an important part of the lower Bridge Street and we will all miss it. We wish them all the best.”

The good news, Carlisle said, is another new business will soon open.
