Pretrial set for Edward ‘Booman’ Smith

JEFFERSON — A pretrial has been set for May 12 for Edward “Booman” Smith of Ashtabula, according Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court records.

Police believe Smith was the gunman who killed Ledondre Raimey, 21, of Painesville, and Elliott “Pacman” Dowdell, 32, of Cleveland, on Nov. 25 at 3418 Hiawatha Ave., City Solicitor Michael Franklin has said.

Smith, 28, of 1120 Alfred Drive, is charged with two counts of aggravated murder with gun specifications, unclassified felonies, and one count of having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony, according to court records.

Common Pleas Judge Ronald Vettel has been assigned the case. The pretrial will begin at 1:30 p.m. May 12 in Vettel’s courtroom.

Gregory Meyers from the Ohio Public Defenders Office and Marie Lane from the Ashtabula County Public Defenders Office have been assigned to represent Smith because it is a capital murder case, meaning the death penalty is an option if he is convicted.

Smith is being held in the Ashtabula County jail.

A man with a long criminal history, Smith was arrested without incident at about 7 a.m. Nov. 26 at motel on Route 20 in Ashtabula Township. Ashtabula police found cocaine, heroin and a weapon in his motel room, police said.

Police have said witnesses who were at 3418 Hiawatha Ave. at about 11:25 p.m. Nov. 25 told them Smith shot Dowdell and Raimey inside the house.

Dowdell was pronounced dead at the scene and Raimey died about an hour later in the emergency room at Ashtabula County Medical Center, according to the coroner’s report.
