Beach glass to shine in Ashtabula harbor again

ASHTABULA — After four years of growing success, the Beach Glass Festival returns to Bridge Street Saturday and Sunday.

The event will take place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Last year, the festival brought thousands of visitors to the historic Ashtabula harbor.

This year, visitors will see close to 90 vendors, a record for the event. That doesn’t include food vendors, such as local favorites Tony’s Dog House, Cunningham’s Sausage, Briquettes Smokehouse and more.

“The first year, we started with only around 40 vendors,” said Troy Dalrymple, who organizes of the event with his wife, Lorie, and own the Beaches store, 1034 Bridge St. “This year, we have people coming from Florida, Canada, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana ... if the weather holds, we will have thousands and thousands of people down here.”

Natural sea glass is a dwindling find on coasts around the world because of advances in environmental awareness. Because more plastic is being used, fewer people are taking glass on their boats or to the beach, causing the numbers to decline. With the decline in glass bottles, the price and rarity of beach glass has risen.

Vases adorned with pieces of beach glass, sea glass jewelry and an array of unique gifts will be for sale at the festival.

“These pieces have seen a minimum of 20 to 30 years action in the waves, sand and air,” Dalrymple said. “Some dismiss it as old beer bottles, but we like to think of them as treasurers from another time.”
