Counterfeit money being passed in county

JEFFERSON — Several cases of counterfeit bills have been reported in recent weeks, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies have been investigating the cases as they receive the reports. Most recently, a West Prospect Road business in Saybrook Township reported a counterfeit $20 bill last week after trying to make a bank deposit. The bank teller advised the employee the bill was fake, according to reports.

Deputies were dispatched to the business, where employees described the bill as being discolored. In addition, the employee told deputies the left front edge of the bill looked as if water had spilled on it and smeared the ink. Another employee also commented, at the time, that the bill looked fake. The employees accepted the bill from the customer as he was a frequent customer of the business, according to reports.

When the employee made a bank deposit later that day, the bank seized the bill and advised the employee they had received at least four other counterfeit $20 bills with the same serial number, according to reports.

The employee supplied deputies with a copy of an invoice with the customer’s name who passed the counterfeit bill.

Deputies recovered a similar counterfeit bill last week at an Ashtabula Township gas station and there have been numerous other reports of counterfeit $20 bills in the Ashtabula area, according to reports.

The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
