Jefferson wins 2014 Scholastic Bowl

ANDOVER — It came down to two private schools and a public school during the championship round of the 2014 Scholastic Bowl Monday evening.

Jefferson Area High School is this year’s champion, beating Grand River Academy and Saint John School with a final score of 260 to 230 and 180, respectively.

Jefferson’s Scholastic Bowl team advisor Doris Kasper said, “I’m excited. You don’t know what to expect when you get here. Two of the team members are in Model UN and they just got back from Chicago last night at 9 p.m., so I wasn’t sure what to expect for today. They did well.”

She said last year was her first year advising the team and they did not even make it to the championship round, so it was exciting to even make it that far.

The 27th annual Scholastic Bowl was hosted at Pymatuning Valley High School auditorium Monday at 6:30 p.m. The moderator for the competition was Laura Jones.

Event coordinator Debbie Quinn said, “It was a great competition!” In the first preliminary round, St. John faced Lakeside and Geneva, beating them with 290 points to 160 and 220, respectively.

In the second preliminary round, Jefferson beat Conneaut and Pymatuning Valley with a score of 350 points to 170 and 270, respectively.

In the third preliminary round, Grand River beat Grand Valley and Edgewood with a score of 270 points to 130 and 240, respectively.

Each round of the competition consisted of a warm-up round with five questions at 10 points each, a team competition round with 20 questions at 10 points each, and a fast lane round with 15 questions at 20 points each.

During the warm up round, each team answers five questions and is not penalized for passing on a question.

However, during all other rounds, passing a question is counted as an incorrect answer and penalized as such.

During the team competitions, incorrect answers are penalized 10 points, and during the fast lane rounds, incorrect answers are penalized 20 points.
