SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP —
McKinsey Elementary School’s cupola, and Ashtabula High School’s bell, soon will shine and ring as part of a new memorial in front of Lakeside High School.
Volunteers Anton Sawicki and Chris Massaro, both of Ashtabula, worked Wednesday to install the bell in the brick memorial.
The bell and cupola were removed and put aside in a safe place when workers demolished McKinsey Elementary School on Bunker Hill Road and Ashtabula High School on West 44th Street.
“We still have to put a weather vane on top,” Sawicki said. “We plan to be done with the memorial in two to three weeks.”
Workers attached the top of the cupola, or bell tower, to its brick base, supported by a cement foundation. A memorial garden is nearby.
The Ashtabula Lakeside Elementary campus on Wade Avenue also boasts a cupola monument in the center of the campus. Shortly before school let out for the summer, students held a parade and placed time capsules inside the monument.
The foundation of the elementary campus cupola was salvaged from West Junior High School before its demolition.
Massaro said the memorials are great additions to the district’s campuses.
