Flag Day ceremonies today at Field of Honor in North Kingsville

NORTH KINGSVILLE — Today is Flag Day, and a salute to Old Glory this afternoon will also help draw down the curtain on the fourth annual Field of Honor display at Greenlawn Memory Gardens on Route 20 in North Kingsville.

At 5:30 p.m., BPO Elks No. 208 will conduct a ceremony in conjunction with the holiday. At the conclusion of that ceremony, old, tattered or soiled flags will be formally retired at a ceremony held by American Legion Post 743 and Marine Corps League. People are urged to bring their old flags to the ceremony for respectful and dignified disposal.

The Field of Honor, which opened Saturday morning with 400 full-sized flags in perfect symmetry, will be officially closed at a 7 p.m. ceremony today. The Field is erected to honor military and emergency first-responders.

Flag Day has its origins some 126 years old, in 1885, when Wisconsin school teacher BJ Cigrand told his students to observe June 14 as “Flag Birthday,” according to usflag.org. Local and state governments picked up on the theme, and in 1916 President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day in 1916. Thirty-three years later, in 1949, President Harry Truman affirmed that National Flag Day be observed on June 14, according to the web site.
