Jefferson Farmer’s Market returns to St. Joseph’s parking lot

JEFFERSON — The Jefferson Farmer’s Market returns to the parking lot of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 32 E. Jefferson St. on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The coming season will feature raffles, contests and giveaways all aimed at making the local shopping experience more enticing.

Not only will customers have the opportunity to purchase the freshest produce available, they will also be able to meet the people who grow the produce and learn exactly how the fruits and vegetables were grown, harvested and held. Developing this relationship means that a buyer can be sure of the quality of the food being purchased.

During the June markets, every purchase brings an entry into a drawing for $25 in Farmer’s Market cash vouchers. The winner will be announced after the close of the June 29 market. Beginning in July, the market will offer free recipes featuring ways to use the fresh foodstuffs at the market.

July 20 will see the 8th annual running of the Zucchini 500. The surface of the parking lot at St. Joseph’s resulted in astronomical distance across all classes in 2012. The winner and runner-up in each of six age classes will receive Farmer’s Market cash vouchers. In addition, the overall longest and shortest runs will receive special recognition.

In an effort to spark local ingenuity, on Aug. 3, the Market will sponsor a Mr. or Ms. Veggie Contest with prizes going to the most creatively dressed vegetables.

In conjunction with the Jefferson Historical Society, the market will sponsor two food contests. During the society’s Corn Fest on Aug. 24, the Farmer’s Market will sponsor a corn muffin contest with the winning entry receiving $25 in cash vouchers. The market will also sponsor an apple cookie contest as part of Apple Fest on Sept. 14. Again the winning entry will receive $25 in Farmer’s Market cash vouchers.

The Jefferson Farmer’s Market will close on Saturday, Oct. 12, with the traditional free apple cider.
