Saving Ashtabula History plans Park-to-Park project

ASHTABULA — Area residents can help spruce up downtown Ashtabula by planting flowers and trees May 25 and 26.

A Park-to-Park Clean-up is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days on Main Avenue, sponsored by Saving the History In Ashtabula. The group hopes to “spruce up” the city before its big Memorial Day parade and ceremony May 27.

“The feeling you will get from helping your town is a feeling I can not explain,” said Kris E. Hamrick, president and founder of the nonprofit organization  dedicated to preserving the city’s historic buildings and landmarks.  “When I started this, I never thought it would affect me in such a positive way.”

Volunteers will have about 3,000 flowers to plant in flower boxes along Main Avenue from South Park to Lance Cpl. Kevin M. Cornelius Memorial Park (the former North Park). Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools, if they have them.

A plaque may be placed on the front of each flower box to designate who donated it, if it is in memory of someone, Hamrick said.

“Please bring the whole family — we will have something for everyone to do,” he said. “Even if you can help for only a few hours, please do so.”

Lunch a breakfast, as well as T-shirts, will be provided for volunteers only.

Items needed for the Park-to-Park project include a pickup truck, paper plates, paper cups, plastic utensils, white vinegar, small bags of chips, coffee, coffee filters, water, cream, sugar, bottled water, pop, cookies, donuts, toilet paper, balloons, shovels, gloves, garbage bags, leaf blowers, hot dogs, buns, ketchup and mustard.

Hamrick can be reached at 812-9889.
