Ashtabula estate auction to feature nautical items and more

ASHTABULA — Capt. Richard Gowan and his wife, Barbara, furnished their home with beautiful things, as well as many nautical items.

A porthole table, port and stern lanterns, ship’s wheel and lantern table, Italian Sextant, folk art, a spinet desk, a gilded mirror, wingback chairs, tables, stemware, fine china, clocks, collectibles, art, a bed, a shaving mirror, candelabras, a piano stool, jewelry, a gentlemen’s chest and several musical instruments were enjoyed by the Gowans during their lifetime.

“Everybody called him ‘captain’ and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame (at the Great Lakes Maritime Museum),” said Barry Densmore of Densmore Auctions in Madison. “The guy really lived well.”

An auction to settle the estate of Barbara Gowan begins at 11 a.m. today by Densmore at 2611 W. Ninth St., with the preview at 10 a.m.

Densmore said he expects up to 1,000 people to attend the auction.

The sale is outdoors and participants are welcome to bring a chair.

The auction also includes a 1981 Rolls Royce Silver Spur with 47,000 miles, and a 2004 Lincoln Town car, with 58,000 miles, Densmore said.

Starting bid on the Rolls Royce is $32,000.

Terms of the sale are cash, check, Visa, MasterCard and Discover; 12 percent buyers premium and 2 percent waived for cash.
