Jefferson Gas woes almost over

JEFFERSON — Only a few Dominion East Ohio customers should remain without gas today after service was totally shut down Monday when air got into the lines, Village Administrator Terry Finger said Wednesday.

The disruption closed Jefferson schools, the Laundromat, just about every restaurant in town and many residents’ furnaces, hot water heaters and appliances.

Dominion crews spent the past two days turning off the gas, purging the lines, and then turning on the gas and doing safety checks for each and every customer.

On Wednesday morning, they had 800 houses on their list and they were half-way through the list by 3 p.m., said Neil  Durbin, spokesman for Dominion East Ohio.

They planned to work until 7 p.m. Wednesday, he said.

Finger said it took a lot longer at the residences than Dominion expected.

“Dominion East workers are visiting every customer in the village to perform a safety check and relight gas for customers without service,” he said.

Finger said he knows it’s frustrating for folks still without power, but the crews are doing the maximum they can do.

The job has not been without its problems — it took several hours to get Kusar’s Farm on Route 307 West up and running, and the same thing happened at Worthington Cylinders on Route 307 East, he said.

There are about 1,800 gas customers in Jefferson, according to Dominion East Ohio.

Those customers whose natural gas service remains on or they are away on business, or on vacation, can still receive a safety check.

Customers are asked to call Dominion at 1-800-362-7557 to schedule an inspection or reconnection.
