Ashtabula woman killed in Jefferson Twp. crash

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP — A 78-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Clay Street and Chapel Road Sunday night.

Terez Demko, of Ashtabula, was pronounced dead at the scene after her car collided with another vehicle, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.

The crash occurred just before 7 p.m.

Preliminary investigation shows Demko was eastbound on Clay Street when she failed to yield the right of way and was struck by the Envoy, which was northbound on Chapel Road. Demko, who was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from her vehicle, according to OHP.

The driver of the Envoy, Michael Riffle, 31, of Jefferson, and his three passengers, Kristy Riffle, 28, Michael D. Riffle, 5, and Bella Riffle, 7-months, were all transported to Ashtabula County Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, according to OHP.

Riffle and his wife were both wearing seatbelts and a child safety seat and booster seat were in use by the two children, according to OHP.

Jefferson Emergency Rescue District and Northwest Ambulance District also responded to the scene.

Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office Investigator Tom Dispenes said Demko’s body was sent to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Preliminary results are expected today.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

The crash is still under investigation by OHP.
