Adoptions stave off death for APL dogs, cats

KINGSVILLE — Thanks to a flush of adoptions at the Mentor PetSmart over the weekend, the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League will not have to euthanize for space this month, board vice president Irene Fiala said.

She said 33 dogs and four cats found homes from the out-of-county event, with another seven dogs and three cats adopted out of the shelter on Saturday.

“For the entire week, we probably found homes for 65 dogs and 15 cats,” she said. “We are all breathing a sigh of relief.”

Fiala said some adoptions are pending pickup, and other are pending spay/neuter surgeries. Every single pet adopted from the APL shelter is spayed or neutered — no exceptions.

Fiala said the shelter had 34 dogs in the population on Monday. Many puppies were adopted at the weekend event, but Fiala said puppies do not count toward the shelter population as they are kept in foster homes.

“While we have breathing room, we are not out of the proverbial woods,” Fiala said. “Remember, we got more than a third of our population in just five days. We don’t want to be in this position again so we have to keep moving pets out.”

The shelter took in 31 dogs over five days last week, prompting a population crisis and adoption blitz.

Fiala said the shelter workers were focused on finding homes for dogs over the weekend, and is still overcrowded with cats at the shelter.

Cages stacked on cages are still housing about 80 cats at the shelter, she said.

“Some of our cats have been at the shelter, living in a cage, for more than a year,” she said.

Two of the shelter’s more hard-to-place pooches — Rusty and Max — were adopted at the PetSmart event.

Rusty was on the shelter’s euthanasia list. Max the coonhound was also placed in a forever home.

“We couldn’t be happier,” Fiala said.

The shelter will continue the $60 adoption special through the end of the month. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter and vaccinations.

“We want to empty out all of our cages,” Fiala said.

n If there is no more room for furry critters at your house, consider a “virtual adoption.” Any cat or dog at the shelter can be virtually adopted for $25. The shelter will provide the adopter with the pet’s picture on the shelter’s Facebook page. Pay through the PayPal link on the shelter’s website and note the name of the virtually adopted pet in the comment section.

n The shelter is also in need of Purina brand dry cat and dog food and any brand canned cat or dog food. Paper towels are also needed.

n The APL will host the Boo Wow Walk at the Maple Ridge Golf Course on Oct. 20. Registration is $20. The event will include the annual costume contest. For more information or to download a registration form, go to

n The shelter will host the annual Reverse Trick-or-Treat at the Green Road shelter on Oct. 25. This is an opportunity for people to bring treats for the cats and dogs at the shelter and go from cage to cage to fill the animals’ treat buckets. Donations of treats and other needed items will be accepted at the event and cookies and punch will be served.
