Ohio Department of Education releases ‘value added’ results from testing

Ashtabula Area City Schools in top 8 percent for 2011-12 school year

ASHTABULA — When it comes to student achievement, recently released state reports show Ashtabula Area City School District ranks first in Ashtabula County and in the top 8 percent of all Ohio schools.

The Ohio Department of Education has released the “Value-added” component of state testing for the 2011-12 school year, meaning the measurement of the educational gains a student makes in a year’s time and Ashtabula students ranked 67th of 832 Ohio school districts.

“We’re extremely excited about the release of the value-added rankings,” Superintendent Patrick Colucci said. “We know we’re doing great things and we want the community to know that, too.”

Colucci explained that the state report card can be measured in two extremely different ways: Achievement test scores provide a snapshot of student performance at a single point in time. This is where indicators come from and what is widely advertised in news reports.

The other way is “Value-added,” Colucci said.

Value-added results show the gains in student test scores from year to year, in other words, where a student started the school year and how much the student learned that year. This is where Ashtabula ranked 67th.

Released state data shows where other local schools ranked: Geneva 146, Pymatuning Valley 161, Grand Valley 298, Buckeye 270, Conneaut 471 and Jefferson 795.

“When we saw our results and learned our ranking, we were ecstatic,” Colucci said. “It’s a testament to the hard work of our students, staff and parents.”
