Geneva High School Drama Club to present ‘Happy Days’ on stage

GENEVA — Sunday, Monday, happy days...

Members of the Geneva High School Drama Club will lace up their saddle shoes and zip up their leather jackets for “Happy Days, A New Musical” presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the high school auditorium.

Drama club director Robin Christopher said she is excited to present a fun, upbeat production with the high school cast and crew.

“Our fall show was Diary of Anne Frank,” Christopher said. “It was a serious show with a small cast, so we wanted to do something big, something fun.”

Christopher said she was transported back in time to her days of watching “Happy Days.”

“I grew up watching Happy Days, so I was so excited to get into the script,” she said. “But some of the kids had no idea about the show. They were like, ‘What’s a Fonzie?’ It’s fun to introduce this classic to a new generation.”

David Sanborn will play the infamous Arthur Fonzarelli. He said he has a big leather jacket to fill in the role.

“I got the role and I was like, ‘Holy crap, I’m the Fonz,” he said. “So I have to get up there and be the cool guy who gets all the girls. That’s the hardest part for me — being the cool guy.”

Rikki Metzler plays Fonzie’s girlfriend Pinkie Tuscadero.

“There were some weird things about the script that you wouldn’t think would be a problem,” she said. “Like the names are so old-fashioned. We couldn’t pronounce the name Imogene. We all got it wrong.”

Metzler and Sanborn said they watched re-runs of the TV show to prepare for their parts.

Metzler said she thinks the musical is great for all ages.

“Kids will like the music and the comedy, and the older generations will get the inside jokes and references to the TV show,” she said.

Christopher said the audience will enjoy the comical script, music and the “plunger dance.”

“The script is very funny. There are a lot of very good dance numbers, including our ‘plunger dance’ and the cast has a dance contest,” she said. “The plunger dance is hilarious. We actually have 44 toilet plungers in that dance.”

Russian exchange student Vlad Chipiga takes on the part of Ralph Malph.

“Vlad really brings something very unique to the part. His accent really adds to it,” Christopher said.

Chipiga said the play about 1950’s America was “not all that strange.”

“There are some things I didn’t get, but I don’t know if that is because it is an American play, or because it isn’t in my generation,” he said. “But it is a lot of fun.”

The show opens on Friday at 7 p.m., with shows at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. Ticket sales begin at the door one hour before each show time.
