Ashtabula planning Walnut Beach clean-up and Tire Amnesty Day

Volunteers are needed to clean Walnut Beach on Saturday, in preparation for the warmer weather.
The clean-up will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, and volunteers are requested to bring gloves and rakes, if possible.
Most of the work will focus on cleaning debris that has washed ashore during the winter months and to pick up any trash that may be on the grounds.
On the same day, the City of Ashtabula will host what could be the final Tire Amnesty Day to help residents get rid of scrap tires.
“Our last Tire Amnesty Day was extremely successful — more than 1,200 tires were brought in during the event,” City Manager Jim Timonere said. “This last event should exhaust the grant money we were awarded for these clean ups.”
The Tire Amnesty Grant Program, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, helps Ohio's local governments develop programs to promote sustainable scrap tire collection drives, sponsor tire drop-off efforts and engage in targeted clean-up events.
Ashtabula residents will be able to bring up to 10 passenger tires to Ashtabula’s Transfer Station and dispose of them for free from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Transfer Station is at 501 W. 24th St.
Citizens must provide proof of residency with an ID or utility bill bearing their address. Additional tires can be disposed of at a cost of $3 per tire without a rim and $5 per tire with a rim.
The Transfer Station also will be open during this time if residents have bulk items they would like to dispose of. Normal dumping fees will apply.
Please contact the Department of Sanitation if you have any further questions at (440) 993-8101.
