Buckeye school boss to resign

Superintendent Joseph Spiccia is taking a position in Wickliffe

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Members of the Buckeye Local Board of Education are expected to accept the resignation of Superintendent Joseph Spiccia at a special meeting next week.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Braden Middle School. Members will then convene an executive session to consider “the employment of a public employee or official of the school district.”

Spiccia, reached for comment Thursday, said he is leaving effective Aug. 1 to accept an identical position with the Wickliffe school district. He was hired in June 2012 to replace Nancy Williams.

Spiccia said he enjoyed his time with Buckeye Local Schools.

“It was an outstanding opportunity and a great experience,” he said. “We began some very interesting initiatives and I worked with truly excellent people.”

Gregory Kocjancic, the school board’s president, said Spiccia’s departure wasn’t a complete surprise. “He let us know positions were opening up,” Kocjancic said Thursday.

The board hopes to find a replacement quickly enough that the person can work alongside Spiccia before his departure, Kocjancic said. The superintendent was a real asset to the district and community, Kocjancic said.

“(Spiccia) has done a great job,” he said. “He worked well with the students and staff.”

The past several months have seen plenty of change involving the Buckeye district’s leadership. In August and November, the district lost board members Jacqueline Hillyer and Mark Estock, respectively, to illness. Their replacements were Jon Hall and Renee Howard.

The Conneaut Area City Schools district is also seeking a superintendent to replace Kent Houston, who submitted his resignation due to retirement last month. Houston has held the job since 2008.
