Children and adults flock to Geneva for Easter Fest

GENEVA — The Easter bunny was a leading attraction on Saturday afternoon as people lined Route 20 to check out the Geneva Easter Fest.

The life-size Easter bunny moved throughout the crowd giving children candy while the parade marched toward Memorial Field early Saturday afternoon.

The event was organized by Sarah Bals of the marketing initiative Connect 534. She said the purpose is to bring new events to the area and revitalize existing events,” she said.

A dog Easter egg hunt and a magic show kicked off the event late Saturday morning and the parade started just after noon.

Bals said more events will be scheduled during the next year. She said the group is looking in to the possibility of an Oktoberfest style event next fall and looking in to a Gus Macker three-on-three event next spring.

Fire trucks, politicians, twirlers and other area groups filled out the parade that started on Eagle Street and wound its way through downtown Geneva on the way to Memorial Field.

“I think it is great. I got three of my grandchildren in there (the parade). It keeps them active,” said Wayne Cline of Madison Township. He said it is a good community event.

Geneva police and fire department vehicles blocked traffic at strategic locations along the parade route. The bulk of the crowd gathered near the intersection of Route 534 and Route 20 enjoying the warm temperatures.

As the parade ended at the former home of the Geneva Eagles football team, children prepared for the mad dash to find eggs placed all over the enclosed football field.

Bals gave instructions to the participants that they would all get one egg and turn it in for prizes at the concession stand.

She said she worked with the Geneva Fire Department and the Geneva Recreation Department to make the event a reality.
