Local doctor indicted on drug charges

Shannon L. Swanson is facing 26 counts of trafficking

JEFFERSON — A former St. Joseph’s Andover Medical Center doctor has been indicted on 26 counts of trafficking in prescription drugs.

Dr. Shannon L. Swanson, 44, of 11638 Lucas Road, E. Springfield, Pa., was indicted by an Ashtabula County Grand Jury March 19 on 26 felony counts of trafficking in drugs, according to court records.

Swanson pleaded not guilty to all 26 counts Friday during an arraignment in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Alfred Mackey’s courtroom. She was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy began investigating Swanson in August 2013, after discovering she was allegedly prescribing controlled substances to friends and coworkers that were not her patients, and not for legitimate medical purposes.

The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy and State Medical Board of Ohio attempted to obtain medical records from St. Joseph’s Andover Medical Center, of the persons she prescribed to and found that no records existed, according to a statement issued by the pharmacy board.

Tina Creighton, of the Humility of Mary Health Partners, the parent company of St. Joseph’s, said Swanson was a contracted employee of the hospital. She was employed with 4M Emergency Medical Services.

Swanson’s contract with Humility of Mary Health Partners has since been terminated. Creighton said she is not certain when her contract was terminated but believes it was around the time charges were filed against her.

The Star Beacon attempted to contact 4M Emergency Medical Services Friday, however, the offices were closed. It is unknown whether Swanson is still employed with the company.
