Wind, rain cause power outages

Problems expected to continue into today

Sporadic power outages across Ashtabula County could continue as the wind and rain worsen, Illuminating Company area manager Ann DiDonato said Sunday evening.

Wind advisories were issued for Ashtabula, Lake, Geauga and Cuyahoga counties Sunday evening, reports.

The counties were not included in a flood watch also issued Sunday night, though a few basements flooded in Geneva and Saybrook Township and Ashtabula residents reported waterlogged roads and slow-draining culverts, dispatchers said.

Approximately 650 homes were without power Sunday afternoon as rain and lightning caused troubles at a substation, DiDonato said.

“The rain, thunder and lightening means the power outage is almost certainly weather related,” DiDonato said Sunday night. “We have people headed out to Ashtabula County right now to fix the problem, but as the weather gets worse, northeast Ohio residents could certainly see more problems.”

The area will see more showers and wind gusts up to 50 mph into this morning, The Weather Channel predicts.

The wind advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. today with winds of 25 to 30 mph, according to

Rain showers are likely Tuesday and Tuesday night with high temperatures in the low 50s, the Website reports.

DiDonato said Illuminating Co. and FirstEnergy customers who experience a power outage should call 1-888-544-4877 to report the problem.

“The managers staff up during this kind of weather so interruptions in power can be addressed quickly,” she said.
