Lights on the Lake turns on holiday cheer

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Most folks can’t reach Clark Griswold’s level of holiday exterior lighting, so why not let someone else do all the work?

Lights on the Lake, Ashtabula County’s drive-through holiday lights extravaganza, opens at 6 p.m. Friday at Lake Shore Park and

will continue to bring smiles to visitors’ faces from 6 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 28.

This is the light show’s third year, and it boasts new features and an impressive number of twinkling, sparkling lights. There are 75 displays throughout the park, plus strings and strings of lights laced across the hills, pines and other trees.

“The lights go on (on) Thanksgiving weekend because many people come home for the holiday and they like to drive through it,” said Mike Wayman, chairman of the Lights on the Lake committee, a nonprofit group consisting of 11 members. “I believe people are really going to be pleased when they see it.”

Soldiers greet visitors as they enter the park off Lake Road and drive under the Lake Shore Park sign into a world of magic.

Tiny lights create elves on a horse-drawn carriage, children building a snowman, flowers, poinsettias, skiers, penguins, Old Man Winter, and Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Lights on the Lake Committee decorated with painted candy canes and strings of pretty lights on the grounds and around the buildings, too.

But hang on to your winter boots! Grab Grandma and Grandpa and take them for a ride to Lake Shore Park because there are lots and lots of new additions this year.

Remember the NBC-TV peacock? It’s working at Lights on the Lake now.

Peace on Earth is giant-sized on the right, while an igloo keeps penguins cool on the left.

Giant-size fun (it’s a secret) awaits next to the tyrannosaurus and three new palm trees.
