Cyclist killed in Dorset

Jeff rider fails to negotiate curve

DORSET TOWNSHIP — A Jefferson man died Thursday in a one-motorcycle crash on Hayes Road, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.

David R. Carlson Jr., 33, of Lenox-New Lyme Road, was traveling southbound when he failed to negotiate a turn on his motorcycle and lost control. Carlson’s motorcycle hit a ditch on the left side of the road and then struck a culvert, which launched the motorcycle in the air, throwing Carlson free of the bike, OHP Trooper Jared Klingensmith said.

“Mr. Carlson was ejected from his bike at that time, then both he and the motorcycle hit a tree. Mr. Carlson was dead when we arrived on the scene,” Klingensmith said.

A passerby called 911, Klingensmith said.

Carlson was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is not suspected in the crash, Klingensmith said.

“The roads were dry and clear with no obstructions or hazards,” Klingensmith said. “This crash was absolutely speed related.”

Klingensmith said the unseasonably warm weather has motorcyclists trying to get in, “one last ride for the year.”
