Medieval Faire raids Geauga Lake for booty

TRUMBULL TOWNSHIP — It just isn’t the same old Avaloch anymore.

The Great Lakes Medieval Faire will feature a score of new sights this year, as owner Larry Rickard raided the Geauga Lake amusement park for plenty of pirate booty.

“We have a lot — and I mean a lot – of exciting, new things for kids to do this year. We made a great effort for children,” Rickard said.

Part of Rickard’s auction wins from Six Flags in Georgia is a 50-foot long pirate ship, great for swash buckling.

The Medieval Faire opens July 5.

“We will have a great swash-buckling adventure for kids. Pirate actors will be on the ship and the kids will have a chance to take over the ship,” he said.

The new pirate ship will be accompanied by Thor’s Obstacle Course, a big bounce and slide play land.

“Kids were really our focus this year,” Rickard said. “Our ultimate goal is to provide entertainment that adults can enjoy with their children; something that is fun for kids but not boring for adults.”

Children will also be able to ride ponies, a sea dragon and other mystical creatures. In Fairyland, children can enjoy free games and crafts.

Rickard said he made, “a significant investment” in decor items at the Geauga Lake auction last week, though he didn’t purchase any rides.

From Geauga Lake, Rickard purchased decorations for a Mediterranean food court and the park’s signature fountain, which was located at the entrance.

“The fountain is a true landmark, something people remember from Geauga Lake. I don’t think we’ll have it ready for this year, but I really look forward to having it on display next year,” Rickard said.

This year, the Medieval Faire will feature beer home brewing classes and beer tasting every weekend. The first northeast Ohio State Beer Brewmaster Championship Aug. 9 and 10, and a feast every weekend. Guest brewmasters will explain the history, the brewing techniques and the use of various ingredients in beer making.
