Police: Man purposely ran over another man with car

ASHTABULA — A city man who, police say, purposely hit another man with his vehicle, faces felonious assault and criminal mischief charges, police said Tuesday.

Matthew J. Umholtz, 23, of 2025 Ashbrook Drive, was released on a personal recognizance bond Tuesday following his arraignment in Municipal Court, officials said.

Umholtz’s trouble with police began shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, when police were called to a disturbance at 1044 Westshore Drive in the Ashtabula Harbor area, Sgt. Joseph Cellitti said. When police arrived, Edward Dick, 24, of Ashtabula, told police he was walking through the yard when he was struck by a vehicle being driven by Umholtz, Cellitti said.

Umholtz fled the scene in his vehicle, according to dispatcher reports, and a bulletin was issued in the county.

“Dick rolled off the hood, at the driver’s side, and grabbed the mirror,” Cellitti said. “He was dragged 10 to 15 feet through the yard.”

Dick was transported to Ashtabula County Medical Center for minor injuries, according to police dispatcher reports. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Police caught up with Umholtz at his home at about 9 p.m., at which time he was arrested and transported to the city jail.

Umholtz could not be reached at his home late Tuesday afternoon. A family member there had no comment on the pending charges.

Umholtz is scheduled to appear Friday in Municipal Court on an unrelated attempted drug-abuse charge, which was filed Jan. 9, court records show.
