Cats will be neutered under PetFix

Timy Sullivan loves her cats, all 5,000 of them.

Sullivan is the founder of PetFix Northeast Ohio, a mobile low-cost spay-neuter clinic that has altered 5,000 animals in an effort to curb pregnancies.

Now PetFix, partnered with the Animal Protective League, Humane Society, and Kitten Care and Rescue, are working to spay or neuter 378 Ashtabula County cats over the next six months.

The four animal-friendly groups will launch the 2008 Ashtabula Cats Project today at the APL shelter, the beginning of the end of unwanted feline pregnancies in feral cats and cats of low-income county residents, Sullivan said.

“The Ashtabula Cats Project will prevent as many as 3,800 unwanted kittens from being born in the county this year alone,” she said.

The PetFix van parks for sponsoring affiliates. Animals are brought to the clinic in the morning and returned to their owners or caregivers in the late afternoon. Surgeries are performed in the mobile clinic by licensed veterinarians assisted by registered veterinary technicians and experienced veterinary assistants, Sullivan said.

Kittens as young as eight weeks old and weighing two pounds are eligible for the Ashtabula Cats Project. Surgeries cost $20 for a neuter and $30 for a spay. All feral cat surgeries cost $30. Cats over two months old are required to receive a $6 rabies vaccination. Owners must show proof of financial eligibility. Feral cat caregivers do not have to prove financial eligibility.

The PetFix van will park at the APL today, Kitten Care and Rescue Thursday and Jan. 31, and the Humane Society at Tractor Supply in Ashtabula Township Jan. 24.

To schedule a cat for surgery through the Ashtabula Cats Project, call the Ashtabula Humane Society at (440) 969-6100 or the APL at (440) 576-3699 or write to Kitten Care & Rescue, P.O. Box 804, Andover 44003 and explain your need. For more information about PetFix Northeast Ohio call (216) 536-0930 or e-mail fixemnow@aol.com or visit www.petfixnortheastohio.org.
