Venomous snakes concern Rock Creek

ROCK CREEK - - Members of the Rock Creek safety committee are concerned with an increasing number of venomous snakes seen in the village.

Several copperhead snakes have been sighted as well as cottonmouth snakes. Council member Kim Gregory said at Monday's regular meeting there is a lot of high grass in the village which serves as an appealing home for these reptiles.

Mayor Bob Schultz said there have been copperheads and rattlesnakes in the village since he was a kid. The concern stems for the safety of the children in the village.

"If I saw a copperhead, I would just walk away, but kids might not do the same," Gregory said.

Clerk/Treasurer Teresa Cumberledge said village employees killed a cottonmouth snake Friday that was about 5 feet long.

"This is the time of year for them to get violent," Schultz said.

As a way to keep the public informed of various safety issue in the village, including the snakes, safety committee members will develop a safety newsletter. Schultz also offered the suggestion of having a safety workshop for residents to learn more about various safety issues in the village.
