Star Beacon gets a shot in the arm

ASHTABULA — A little sting in the arm will hopefully keep the scourge of flu from area residents hoping to have a healthy winter.

“It’s a way to help our employees avert the flu,” said Star Beacon Publisher Jim Frustere of the flu shot program administered on Thursday afternoon at the newspaper’s office on Park Avenue.

He said the program is in its second year. “I’m told this is the best time of the year (for vaccination),” Frustere said.

The very young and the elderly, are especially at risk, but Cindy Callahan, an infection control practitioner from Ashtabula County Medical Center, said it is important for everyone to get vaccinated.

Some of the people receiving shots were a bit apprehensive, but were happy that a little pinch was all they felt when the needle pierced their skin.

“It is a Center for Disease Control recommendation,” Callahan said of everyone receiving a flu shot each year.

Callahan said hand washing is also an important tool against the spread of flu.

Seventeen people took advantage of the flu shot program at the Star Beacon this year.
