Ashtabula resident wants tire dump to go away

ASHTABULA — A Jefferson Avenue resident is upset about an illegal tire dump site behind her house.

Anne Thome of 6011 Jefferson Ave. first noticed the tires several years ago, but the problem keeps piling up.

She doesn’t know who owns the lot. She’s tried to find out, but says it’s difficult to determine, even going to the county courthouse did not  help.

“People go behind Chapman’s store (on Bunker Hill Road) and roll the tires down the hill,” she said. “They dump everything — tanks, shrubs, bushes, mattresses and TV.”

Thome, who has lived in her Jefferson Avenue home for 37 years, takes pride in her yard. The property backs up to Bunker Hill. She looks up the steep hill and sees the back of the store from her back yard.

“I did all the landscaping myself,” she said as she gives a visitor a tour of well-landscaped property. “I wouldn’t have called the newspaper, but I have called and called City Hall and nothing happens.”

City staff are aware of the illegal dumping, and are planning to look into it, said Lucianna Ratermann, director of the city’s planning and community development.

As of Wednesday, no one had contacted Thome.

Her biggest concern is mosquitoes that those 30 or so tires are going to attract this summer, she said.

When tires are dumped illegally, they can fill with rain water and draw mosquitoes, increasing the risk of West Nile virus. Infected mosquitoes spread the virus, which can cause a potentially fatal disease.
