Accused dog fighter faces animal cruelty charges

ASHTABULA — An Ashtabula man with a lengthy criminal history is accused of cruelty to animals and prohibition of companion animals, resulting in five dogs being confiscated by animal control officers.

Rhamaud Hull, 34, of 3418 Hiawatha Ave., allegedly allowed the dogs to fight at the home, Ashtabula Police Lt. Joseph Cellitti said.

City police executed a search warrant at the address Friday after receiving a tip of dog fighting Thursday, Cellitti said.

Hull was not home at the time of the raid, but police were on the look-out for him. On Monday, Hull appeared in Municipal Court and entered ‘not guilty’ pleas. A personal recognizance bond was set for $2,250, according to court records.

The animals are being held at the Animal Protective League on Green Road in Kingsville.

Cellitti said three of the five dogs had fresh wounds when police found them in fenced-in pens in the backyard. Police also discovered numerous other items having to do with dog fighting, he said.

Hull’s past criminal record includes guilty pleas to dogs at large, vicious dog, possession of drugs, two counts of child endangering, two counts of drug abuse, two counts of driving with no operator’s license, driving under suspension, driving with no headlights, attempted possession of cocaine, two counts of criminal trespassing, assault, two counts of obstruction of official business, three counts possession of marijuana and aggravated disorderly conduct, according to Municipal Court records.

He also has been convicted of felony drug-related charges in the past, according to Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court records.
