Firefighters investigating Ashtabula house fire

ASHTABULA — Firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant house at 10:48 p.m. Tuesday at 1223 W. Ninth St.

First arriving units found a fully engaged blaze throughout the second floor of the brown and white, 2 1/2-story, wood-frame structure, according to Ashtabula Fire Department reports.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and brought it under control in about 20 minutes, the report said. Even so, smoke continued to come from the attic and it took almost an hour to fully extinguish all of the hot spots, firefighters said Wednesday.

No one was injured.

The last fire-fighting crew left the scene at about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, reports show.

A total of 14 firefighters from the City of Ashtabula and Ashtabula Township responded to the fire call. Community Care Ambulance was on scene.

There were no utilities connected to the building, the yard grass was about three-feet high and house appeared to have been vacant for some time, firefighters said.

The owner of the property is Ronda L. Johnson of Ashtabula.

Wednesday afternoon, neighborhood children said they heard fireworks going off in the vicinity of the home late Tuesday night. A nearby neighbor said he wishes the firefighters would have let the house burn down because it’s an eyesore to the community. He didn’t want his name in the newspaper.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
