Ashtabula County I-90 speed limit jumps to 70 mph July 1

COLUMBUS — As promised, the speed limit on Interstate 90 that bisects Ashtabula County will jump in little more than a month, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

Effective July 1, the speed limit on I-90 “just outside Cleveland to the Pennsylvania border” will be 70 mph, a 5 mph increase, according to an ODOT release. Large chunks of I-70, I-71 and I-75  will also see a speed limit hike, the agency   reported.   The  interstates

join the Ohio Turnpike as the only highways where 70 mph travel will be permitted.

The speed limit increase is contained in the state transportation budget bill approved several weeks ago. Affected are stretches of interstates deemed “outside urbanized areas,” according to ODOT. I-90 east of Cleveland is an uninterrupted stretch all the way to Pennsylvania, while the other interstates see their 70 mph broken up near certain cities.

To prepare motorists for the speed change, ODOT is preparing more than 300 signs at a cost approaching $8,300. The law impacts almost half the 1,332 miles of interstate highway within the state, ODOT said in the statement.

The speed limit jumps on these other highways:

• I-70 from the Indiana border east to just outside Wheeling, W.Va. (excluding Dayton, Columbus and Zanesville)

• I-71 from the Jeremiah Morrow Bridge in southwest Ohio to near the border of Cuyahoga and Medina counties (excluding Columbus)

• I-75 from the outskirts of Toledo south to Dayton (excluding Findlay and Lima)

• I-76 between Akron and Youngstown

• I-77 from Canton to the West Virginia border

The transportation bill held other significance for the area besides the speed limit. The measure also makes available to the state money to keep ODOT workers at the tourist information office inside the I-90 rest area at the Pennsylvania line.
