Paths to progress

Ramps closed on Rt. 11 signal start of makeover

COLUMBUS — Road-closed signs posted at the busy Route 11/Interstate 90 interchange over the weekend signals the start of a four-year, $68 million highway overhaul project, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

On Saturday, the ramp to Route 11 from I-90’s westbound lanes was closed, along with the ramp that leads Route 11 traffic to I-90 eastbound, ODOT announced. The ramps are off-limits for bridge reconstruction work, said Justin Chesnic, ODOT District 4 spokesman. The ramps aren’t scheduled to reopen until the end of September.

In addition, traffic on Route 11 over I-90 will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

The ramp/ bridge closures are part of a project that will perform a massive makeover to I-90 and seven bridges on a stretch roughly between routes 45 and 11. The entire project isn’t scheduled to wrap up until November 2016, Chesnic said.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” he said Monday. “It’s a really big project.”

The closed ramps will require motorists to travel just a couple of miles out of their way. For the I-90 ramp to Route 11 southbound, take Route 11 north to Seven Hills Road, then back to Route 11 south. For the ramp off Route 11, travel south to Route 46 and return to Route 11 north.

More changes will come to the interchange as part of the project. Two ramps that feature sharp turns, including the ramp that funnels northbound Route 11 traffic onto eastbound I-90, will be rebuilt for safer travel, Chesnic said.

“We’re going to make them more like traditional exits,” he said.

Other work has begun related to the Route 11 overhaul:

n State Road over I-90 is closed through early October

n Western Reserve Greenway Trail under I-90 is closed through mid-May (detour is Route 307 to Chapel Road to Austinburg Road)

n Lane restrictions on I-90 (between routes 45 and 11) and Route 11 (between Route 46 and Seven Hills Road) can be expected because of the construction

Much of I-90 in Ashtabula County is dotted with orange barrels and jersey barriers. The arrival of spring ushered in the second leg of a $44.6 million freeway reconstruction project in Conneaut between Conneaut Creek and the Pennsylvania line.

Because of that work, portions of Furnace and South Ridge roads in Conneaut that pass beneath I-90 are closed through the end of August, ODOT has announced.

Elsewhere, Route 193 in Sheffield and Kingsville townships between Sheffield-Monroe and Gageville-Monroe roads is closed until mid-May for culvert work. Portions of Route 193 will face various lane restrictions because of paving projects.
