Ashtabula Township firefighters receive federal grant for equipment

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Ashtabula Township Fire Department was awarded $169,258 in federal funding to buy new equipment.

The fire department will use $111,618 to purchase three new heart monitor/defibrillators with automatic external defibrillator capabilities for the paramedic ambulances and engine truck. It also will purchase 22 sets of fire fighting gear, such as helmets, boots, coats, pants and gloves to replace gear worn out by firefighters, costing $57,640.

The funding was made possible by the 2012 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which assists local fire departments in programs and activities to improve the effectiveness of fire fighting operations through specialized emergency training for response to situations like terrorist attacks, enhancement of emergency medial service programs and development of health and safety initiatives and equipment and facility upgrades.

The fire department’s match is $8,462. The grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency and provides an opportunity for local government to receive federal tax dollars back to their communities for specific projects relating to fire and EMS.
