August trial set for Dorset Township woman charged with hiring hitman

JEFFERSON — A jury trial for a Dorset Township woman accused of hiring a hitman to kill the first wife of her late husband has been rescheduled for August, according to Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court records.

Angel Brown recently obtained a new attorney, her third since arrested more than a year ago. Albert Purola is representing Brown, replacing Leo J. Talikka, according to court documents.

Brown faces a charge of conspiracy to aggravated murder and was scheduled to stand trial last month. The new trial date is Aug. 6, and the case will be heard before Common Pleas Court Judge Ronald Vettel, according to records.

Brown was charged in January 2012 after she reportedly paid an acquaintance $4,000 to kill Lisa Luke, the first wife of Brown’s husband. Authorities have said Brown apparently feared Luke or her three children would receive money from an insurance settlement resulting from the man’s death in a 2011 traffic crash.

However, the man Brown allegedly hired for the job had worked as a confidential informant for the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, deputies have said. The man contacted Sheriff William Johnson with details of the plot and detectives immediately launched an investigation, according to reports.

Brown is free on a bond that carries plenty of restrictions, including the provision she wear an electronic monitor that tracks her movements and location, officials have said.
