Ashtabula schools have emergency levy

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP —  With a levy on the May ballot, the Ashtabula Area City School District's superintendent and levy chairpeople are asking supporters to get out and vote.

Superintendent Patrick Colucci said it is crucial to support this levy.

“We are working hard to make sure we reach everyone,” he said. “We want to bring back busing and eliminate pay to play.”

The school board unanimously voted in January to place the emergency levy on the May 7 ballot.

Now-retired treasurer William Hill said the millage the district is requesting has come down from 6.4-mills to 6.2-mills.

Colucci said the financial distress this school district faces is not different than other schools across the state and even though the House of Representatives is looking to boost school aid, it’s nothing schools can count on.

“We are in the second inning of a nine inning game,” he said, noting the Senate could reject the proposal or it may never come to fruition.

If AACS’s emergency levy passes in May, it will raise $2.7 million each year for five years, according to the resolution.

It will cost the owners of a home valued at $100,000 about $190 a year, or $15.83 a month, school officials said.

In the last five years the board of education has reduced more than $4 million.
