N. Kingsville resident launches collection for vets

NORTH KINGSVILLE — Resident Shirley Corlett is expanding her “payback time” collection effort for hospitalized veterans to two regional service centers.

Corlett, who made her first collection of items in the spring of 2012, announced this week that she will repeat the effort and share the results with the Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland and the Erie Homeless Veterans program. As with a year ago, the effort is an attempt to “pay back” veterans for their sacrifices with personal care items.

The collection sites are Ducro Funeral Home, Elm Avenue, Ashtabula; Conneaut Human Resources Center, Mill Street, Conneaut; Northeast Ambulance, South Broadway, Geneva; Country Neighbor, Route 45 South, Orwell; Jefferson Community Center and Gazette Publishing, both on Jefferson Street; and Andover Village Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, South Main Street, Andover.

Corlett is seeking donations of the following care items for both women and men: deodorant, body wash, body lotions, denture cleaner tablets, tooth brushes and paste, name-brand disposable razors, shaving cream, small bottles of hand sanitizer, toilet paper and dishes/cookware for veterans setting up a household.

Items needed by women veterans include hair brushes and scrunchies, panty liners and shampoo/conditioner.

Food items such as individual packages of crackers, cookies, popcorn, hard candy and chocolate will be accepted. Juice boxes, small bags of chips and snacks, as well as large-print word-search books, pens and craft kits are needed, as well.

“The Veterans Homeless Center in Erie has a great need for twin-size air mattresses,” Corlett said. “These could be purchased, perhaps by church groups or civic organizations. The person I spoke with stated that they are able to get the homeless veterans inside and out of the (elements), but they still have to sleep on the floor with blankets. So please, Ashtabula County, let’s do something about this.”

Corlett said that response to the spring 2012 campaign was “phenomenal,” and she followed up with a campaign for socks and other personal care items in the fall.

“This campaign will run from May 1 to May 23,” she said. “And once again, I hope to deliver the items by Memorial Day.”

For more information, call Corlett at 224-1173.

James Wyman, however was still able to get to work though. Well, kind of, that is.
