Slyyders Bar and Grill to raffle off concert tickets

For the Star Beacon

GENEVA TOWNSHIP — Slyyders Bar and Grill is going a little bit country for local children with a back-to-school fundraiser that will set some boots on fire.

The restaurant on Route 20 just west of the city will raffle off tickets for two to Blossom Music Center for concerts in July, August and September, including shows by Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban and Luke Bryan.

All proceeds will benefit Asa’s Angels, a local charity founded by Realtor Asa Cox of Asa Cox Homes to help needy children succeed.

Slyyders owner Doug Hickey said he heard about Asa’s Angels and wanted to help as much as he could.

“So I thought, ‘What could be better than a really awesome country music raffle?’ Then I decided we could do nine raffles with no problem,” he said.

The goal is to raise money to provide children with school supplies, haircuts, physicals, books and clothing for the back-to-school rush.

Cox said she hopes to raise $100,000 to give 2,500 children a back-to-school boost.

“I grew up very, very poor,” she said. “I grew up going to school without new pencils and new clothes. I know what that feels like, and I want to help children be able to go to school with confidence and a backpack full of supplies, a fresh haircut and a good attitude.”

Asa’s Angels has provided 6,500 gifts for needy children at Christmas, 1,207 Easter baskets, and fed 557 people a Thanksgiving meal last year, Cox said.

“I always wanted to give back to the community,” she said. “Six years ago, when I was financially able to help, I founded Asa’s Angels to do just that. Over the years I can very clearly see the difference that we are making in our communities.”

The back-to-school raffle doesn’t just end with two pavilion seat concert tickets, Hickey said.

“If you win and you are present for the drawing, you get a free limosine ride to and from the concert,” he said. “If you buy $10 in tickets, you get a free $10 ticket to the Lake County Speedway.”

The drawings will be held every other Monday at the restaurant. The next concert is Blake Shelton with a drawing on July 22.

Hickey said there is no better time to get the concert raffle tickets than with dinner at Slyyders, which now offers Friday and Saturday dinner specials created by chef Kevin Thompson.

“We love to change up the menu and do new, different things,” Thompson said. “It’s a special meal at a really great price.”

Thompson said he works to source as many ingredients as possible locally to provide the freshest meals possible.

Slyyders also features a full bar and an outdoor volleyball court. Patio dining is open all summer long.

“We hope everyone will come out and support Asa’s Angels and the local kids and get some raffle tickets to some great concerts while doing a great thing for the community,” Slyyders general manager Jamie Nuccuarone said.

Raffle tickets are also available at Asa Cox Homes in Madison and Painesville. The raffle is also sponsored in part by The Lake County Speedway and WKKY, through partnership with the Salvation Army, WELW, Lubrizol, Painesville City, Painesville City School, the Lake County General Health District, Lake Health, Ladies and Gentlemen's, Leadership Lake County, the Lake County YMCA, Lake Metro Parks, and local churches.
