Madison Township man charged in rash of vehicle break-ins

MADISON TOWNSHIP — A Madison Township man has been arrested in connection with a rash of vehicle break-ins over the past several days, police said.

Christopher Nash, 24, of Devon Street, has been charged with three counts of felony theft, two counts of breaking-and-entering, 10 counts of misdemeanor theft and two counts of forgery and misuse of a credit card, according to a press release.

Nash has been arraigned on the charges in Painesville Municipal Court, said Madison Township Police Chief Leonard Del Calzo. A preliminary hearing on the felony charges has been scheduled for July 22, according to court records. Nash will be represented by a public defender.

Nash is charged with entering more than a dozen vehicles over the past two weeks, Del Calzo said. The thefts were concentrated in the north end of the township, he said. A variety of items, ranging from credit cards to a laptop computer, were stolen, the chief said. Other vehicles had been entered but nothing was taken, he said.

Most of the vehicles were unlocked, Del Calzo said.

For days, police had been looking for a man in a photo provided by a store surveillance camera who reportedly used a stolen credit card in a transaction. On Wednesday, officers responding to a suspicious person call encountered a man, later identified as Nash, whom they believe is the individual in the security photo.

“(Nash) matches the man,” Del Calzo said.

Township police hope publicity given the arrest will prompt more victims to step forward, Del Calzo said.
