County, city team up to expand recycling

ASHTABULA — The City of Ashtabula and the Ashtabula County Solid Waste District have teamed up to expand recycling options for area residents.

When the Solid Waste District recently discontinued its drop-off sites because of the cost and abuse of the sites, the county contacted the city about opening its West 24th Street site on Saturdays, City Manager Jim Timonere said.

Consequently, the city’s transfer station will open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., starting this Saturday, in an effort to promote recycling in Ashtabula County. This is in addition to the site’s regular hours, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Timonere said he understands the importance of recycling and city officials are working on a plan to offer curbside recycling for city residents.

“By staffing the recycling center, we can eliminate the issues we have had throughout the county with contamination in the recycling streams,” he said. “We are always looking for ways to help each other out and this partnership with the county is another example of our willingness to work with our neighbors.”

Janice Switzer, Solid Waste District coordinator for the Ashtabula County Solid Waste District, said the county is thankful the City of Ashtabula is willing to provide recycling opportunities to county and city residents.

Certain procedures are required to be followed when utilizing the Recycling Drop-Off Center, 501 W. 24th St.:

• Prepare and separate recyclables properly. All material should be placed loose in the appropriate containers. Do not put plastic bags full of recyclables in any container.

• Mixed Recycling – The following materials should be placed loose in the container for plastic and cardboard:

•  No. 1 and No. 2 plastics (water, soda, milk and detergent bottles). Rinse container and remove caps;

• Paperboard (cereal boxes) – Remove and discard liner and flatten boxes;

• Glass - Rinse all containers; please loose in appropriate containers and separate by color, separate by clear glass, brown glass and green glass;

•  Metals – Rinse all containers; place loose in appropriate bin;

•  Aluminum cans;

•  Steel cans, and

•  Mixed Paper – The following materials may be placed in the paper Gaylord boxes: newspaper, magazines, office paper and junk mail.

In addition to the Recycling Center, the Transfer Station will be open for bulk item and refuse disposal at the same time on Saturdays. Trash must be weighed and will be charged accordingly for disposal.

In the near future, the city will be adding a new scale and redesigning the flow of traffic for easier use.
