Water tower rising near Conneaut-Kingsville line

CONNEAUT — A water improvement project literally years in the making is nearing completion in Conneaut.

A new water tower on Creek Road near the Kingsville Township should be operational by the end of the year. It will replace a tower on Creek Road in the township believed to pre-date World War II, according to municipal records.

“It’s moving along real well,” City Manager Tim Eggleston said Friday. “We’re very happy with the progress. It’s almost done.”

The tower could be painted next month and inscribed with the name of the city, officials said.

City officials, fearing the old tower was nearing collapse, has been planning its replacement for the past two years. Construction started in early summer.

Caldwell Tanks Inc., is doing the work. The company is being paid $1.87 million to build the Creek Road tank and also repair and repaint the larger tank on Brown Avenue, near UH Conneaut Medical Center, according to city documents. The new construction accounts for nearly $1.4 million of the total.

The Brown Avenue tank is expected to get its facelift early next year.

State grants and loans will cover the bulk of the cost, administrators have said.
