Child beaten with nail-studded board

CONNEAUT — A Conneaut man is in jail awaiting a hearing on charges he recently beat a 9-year-old boy with a board that held a nail, authorities said.

Christopher Evans, 41, 166 Marshall St., has been charged with domestic violence, aggravated menacing and endangering children, a Conneaut Municipal Court spokeswoman said Tuesday. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and will have a pre-trial hearing at 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to court documents.

He is in city jail in lieu of bond, a court spokeswoman said.

Police were contacted late on the afternoon of Aug. 13 by someone who said a boy had been struck by his mother’s boyfriend. The man used a board imbedded with a nail, the caller told officers.

Police found the boy and the suspect, later identified as Evans, at a Marshall Street residence, according to a report. The boy initially told officers he was not struck with a board, saying instead that he had fallen. Evans then told police the injury happened when the boy was kicked by another child and the boy agreed, according to a report.

When alone with police, however, the boy said he was struck by Evans when he didn’t do the laundry, officers said. The child also said Evans threatened to kill him if Evans was jailed, police said.

Police said the boy suffered “obvious trauma,” along with a puncture wound on his thighs. A report does not indicate if the boy needed medical attention.

Inside the house police found two bed slats about four feet long that reportedly were used for discipline. One of the slats had a nail protruding from it, officers said.

Children’s Services was contacted regarding the status of three children living in the house, police said in a report.
