2014 dog licenses go on sale Dec. 1

JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County residents will be able to purchase their 2014 dog licenses beginning Dec. 1.

This year, the county will begin offering three-year and permanent licenses in addition to the traditional one-year license.

The additional licenses are not the only change this year. The cost to license dogs in the county has also changed.

Ashtabula County Commissioners approved an increase in the cost of dog licenses back in August.

A one-year license will now cost $12, the three-year license will cost $36 and a permanent license will cost $120.

State law requires all dogs, that have reached three months of age, be licensed.

The three-year license and permanent license can only be purchased at the Ashtabula County Auditor’s Office between Dec. 1 and Jan. 31, 2014. These longer-term licenses are not refundable if the dog dies or is passed to a new owner, according to the Auditor’s Office. The permanent license is good for the lifetime of the dog.

Only a one-year license can be purchased after Jan. 31 at an increased cost of $24.

The fee for a kennel license is $60. If purchased after Jan. 31, the cost increases to $120. The kennel license can only be purchased through the Auditor’s Office and a vendor’s license is required for dog kennel owners.

Dog licenses may be purchased or renewed online with a credit card at There will be a $2 processing fee on all online orders.

Dog owners can also order a dog license by mail. To use this option, mail the appropriate fee and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Ashtabula County Auditor, 25 West Jefferson St., Jefferson, OH 44047. The dog owner’s name, address and phone number must be provided as well as a description (age, sex, color, breed, vaccinated, name) of the dog, according to the Auditor’s Office.

Licenses can be purchased in person, without a handling fee, during regular business hours at the Auditor’s Office from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Cash, checks and money orders are accepted. No credit or debit cards.

Registrations are also accepted at the Ashtabula License Bureau, Jefferson License Bureau, Kray Feed, Pleasant Animal Hospital and Saybrook Feed. These locations collect a 75-cent fee per dog. Licenses will be mailed from the Auditor’s Office within a few weeks.

Renewal applications will be mailed around Dec. 1. Anyone not receiving a renewal notice by Dec. 9 should contact the Auditor’s Office at 440-576-3794.
