City manager has plan to fix streets

ASHTABULA — City residents don’t have to look far to find examples of poor street conditions.

From their front doors, many residents can see potholes and orange construction cones placed along the street, which are intended to warn motorists of sinkholes and other hazards from crumbling streets.

City Manager Jim Timonere said he’s putting together a comprehensive paving plan, a systematic approach to keeping city streets in good shape.

He’s looking at a 2-3 year project up to $5 million.

The money to pay back the loan would be normal paving money set aside each year, which normally amounts to $300,000 to $400,000, he said.

City Council Monday night approved Timonere’s request for an ordinance in the amount of $7,500 from the street Improvements account. The funding will be utilized for engineering services to create the master paving plan for application loan funding through the state infrastructure bank.

City Council also approved Timonere’s request for an ordinance to appropriate $6,500 for building maintenance.

The money will be used as follows: $2,000 to repair building doors at the Public Works Department and the ACTS bus garage, as well as $300 for jail doors, $1,200 for jail shower doors and $2,900 to repair the salt dome roof.

In other business, the manager said garbage pick-up will be delayed by one day on Nov. 28 because of the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Thanksgiving Day pick up will be on Friday, Nov. 29, and Nov. 29’s pick up will be on Saturday, Nov. 30.
