Bank heist suspect turns self in

ASHTABULA — A city resident who police suspect robbed a downtown bank Monday has been arrested, Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said.

It happened at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Justice Center after the suspect consulted with his attorney, Stell said.

The name of the suspect is not being released until he is formally charged with the crime and makes his first court appearance today in Municipal Court, 110 W. 44th St.

“We were working with other agencies and hot on his trail,” Stell said. “I got a call from his lawyer, who is in Willoughby, and we arranged for him to turn himself in.”

When the suspect arrived at the Justice Center, he was arrested without incident and placed in a city jail cell.

Police believe the suspect walked into the U.S. Bank, 4717 Park Ave., at about 11:15 a.m. Monday.

He didn’t show a weapon, but asked for money and then fled southbound on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No one was injured.

Witnesses said the suspect wore a gray hoodie, blue jeans and covered part of his face with a scarf.

The FBI, Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, the Trumbull Ashtabula Group (TAG) and the Cleveland Police Department helped city police investigate this case.
