Driver charged in Walnut Blvd. crash that injures four people

ASHTABULA — An Ashtabula man has been charged with drunken driving and aggravated vehicular assault in the Aug. 31 crash on Walnut Boulevard at Union Avenue that injured four people, one seriously.

Tyler P. Ashley, 26, is the driver charged in the singe-car crash in which five people, including Ashley, were hospitalized after his Honda Civic went over a cliff and into a private beach near Lake Erie at 3:05 a.m. All of the passengers were in the 20s, reports show.

Ohio State Highway Troopers said Ashley failed to yield at a stop sign.

Ashley faces four counts of aggravated vehicular assault, third-degree felonies, and one count of driving under the influence, a first-degree misdemeanor, said Lt. Jerad Sutton of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Ashley was arraigned in Ashtabula Municipal Court and remains out of jail on a personal recognizance bond, records show.

A hearing was scheduled for Nov. 26, but it has been continued to a later date, Sutton said.

The passengers in Ashley’s vehicle were Benjamin Ashcroft of North Kingsville, Brandyn Frampton of Kingsville and Shawn Ryder and Katrina Welton, both of Ashtabula. All of the passengers were transported to area hospitals and treated for their injuries. Welton was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she was in critical condition, but recovered from her injuries, police said.
