Flames tear through attic of Ashtabula Township home

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Firefighters were called to extinguish a fire Tuesday morning at 1630 E. 30th St., Chief Michael Fitchet of the Ashtabula Township Fire Department said.

The call came in at 7:46 a.m. and firefighters arrived on the scene at 7:51 a.m. to find smoke showing from a two-story house at 1629 E. 29th St., in a neighborhood off State Road, according to the firefighter’s report.

Clarence J. Metcalf is the owner of the house, Fitchet said, noting the original call came in for East 30th Street.

Firefighters searched both floors of the home for occupants and then put out the fire in the second-floor bedroom, the report said.

No one was injured.

A hand line was taken to the roof to extinguish the blaze in the attic that could not be reached from the inside of the house, the report said.

Ashtabula City Fire Department was called in to assist.

“The roof and back of the home suffered significant damage,” Fitchet said. “We boarded up some windows.”

All firefighters cleared the scene at 10:25 a.m., reports show.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
