Two arrested following Friday afternoon drug bust in Ashtabula Township

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Two people were taken into custody on Friday afternoon after the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department served a search warrant at 3923 State Road, said Ashtabula County Sheriff William Johnson.

“This has been an on-going (drug) investigation since September,” Johnson said while officers monitored traffic and continued the investigation along the busy section of State Road as students walked home from Braden Junior High School.

Johnson said the investigation is continuing and more arrests could occur.

“We confiscated what we believe to be a significant amount of heroin and some guns,” he said.

“We were able to get a search warrant and it was served at 1:30 p.m.,” he said. Johnson said the community was elated that we were “doing our thing.”

Johnson said drug cases take a long time and often activity must be allowed to continue for awhile so a good case can be made and suppliers can be taken off the street.

The two suspects are expected to be arraigned Monday in Ashtabula Municipal Court on multiple charges.

“Drugs are a big problem because it takes a lot of time to get to the big people,” Johnson said. He said it is fairly easy to do a buy-bust, but that doesn’t deal with the larger problem.

He said there was a lot of activity at this particular location.

Johnson said he would love to tell people that the drug problem will be solved, but realizes that may not be realistic. He said drugs are the biggest world-wide crime and law enforcement must battle “a battalion with a platoon” to try and make a dent in the drug trafficking.

Johnson said the department is battling the drug problem each and every day as information becomes available.
