Cork Elementary basketball star honored

HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP — Cork Elementary student Ayden Richmond, 9, went from the basketball court to the Ohio House of Representatives floor, Geneva Superintendent Mary Zappitelli said, to be honored for his skills in the local Elks Club Hoop Shoot competition.

Ayden won the local competition, as well as the county, state and regional finals and placed seventh in the nation.

“Rep. John Patterson commended Ayden for “performing under pressure and under fire” during both the free-throw competitions and with his acceptance speech for his House Resolution of Commendation.

Elks Club representative J.P. Ducro attended the presentation of the award in Columbus to support Ayden.

“It is evident that great things can accomplished with teamwork,” Patterson said, “In this case Ayden Richmond and his family from his school in Geneva, his teacher Nancy Patterson and Principal Melissa Doherty and our Elks Club.”

Ayden gave a speech during the ceremony in front of members of the Ohio House.

“My dad and I had a goal for me to make it to Nationals from the beginning,” he said. “I shot about 100 free throws every day to make it there.”

Ayden had a trick for staying focused during the competitions — he didn’t watch the other competitors or the crowd.

“I just looked at the rim the whole entire time,” Ayden said. “I didn’t want to get nervous watching the other kids shoot.”

Ayden said he is proud of his achievement and said he will remember his free-throw competition experience forever.

“At regionals, I shot my best score — 24 out of 25 — and I beat that kid from ‘the state up north.’ I can’t wait to beat him again,” Ayden said.
